Topping is not ordinary pruning. It cuts branches back to stubs or undersized laterals to force a shorter crown, often without preserving the tree’s natural structure.
Topping trades height for new problems
Removing a large share of the leaf-bearing crown stresses the tree. Large open cuts can decay, and the tree may respond with fast-growing shoots below the cuts. Those shoots can be weakly attached even when they make the crown look full again.
The result may be repeated maintenance, a misshapen tree and greater future concern rather than a durable reduction in risk.
A proper recommendation starts with the objective
If the concern is clearance, a damaged limb or one overextended part of the crown, selective pruning may address that target. Where size is fundamentally wrong for the site, a professional may discuss reduction within biological limits or removal and replacement.
Cypress does not offer topping as a shortcut. The tree and the reason for pruning are assessed before the scope is set.
